RDF Production
Written by D. Perez
There are different kinds of renewable energy that came from trash. Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) is one of the renewable energy that is produced from waste materials. The garbage from the Municipal Solid Waste that is composed of plastics and biodegradable wastes are the main ingredient for the production of refuse-derived fuel.
The production of RDF helps our environment to fight against global warming that we are experiencing recently. It became an alte
ative way for waste management processes that lessen the pollution on earth. RDF does not only provide solution for the environmental problems but also helps out in the economy. Sadly, there is no production of RDF in Thailand due to lack of information and decision in initiating an RDF plant in the country. The knowledge in technology and cost in producing RDF is required to be able to decide if it is good for the country. RDF is mainly produced in European countries like United Kingdom, Spain Sweden and Italy. It is also reported that there is a plant being built in Athens, Greece which process RDF production.
The usage of RDF and the market that will buy it in a certain place also needs to be checked. This is to ensure that refuse-derived fuel can be properly utilized and provides economic growth. RDF can be used as itself or co-fired with other kinds of fuel. It is mainly used to replace coal-fired plants in producing electricity. Cement kiln industries can also use RDF in their production of brick and cement. In Spain RDF is mainly used in their cement kiln industry that is why it can be properly consumed in the country.
It is needed to ensure the quality of RDF meets the standard which should be high in calorific value but low concentration of toxic chemicals. Metals and chlorine should be properly separated in the production of refuse-derived fuel to meet the specific standards of the fuel. The quality standards of RDF is mainly for environmental purposes to which it is ensured that it does not emit greenhouse gases or adds up in the pollution in our planet. That is why the segregation stage in the process of refuse-derived fuel production is very crucial since it is needed to separate the unnecessary contents of the municipal solid waste. The metals and other waste material that is not needed in the production can be also sold in the market or can be processed as well into a new and useful product like RDF.
