The growing number of Financial Institutions every day in our neighborhood has led to a great demand of people required to operate both public and private run banks. An important role played by an individual in the functioning of the bank is by a Probationary officer ( PO). The jobs assigned to a probationary officer are, General Banking, Administration work and other work assigned by the bank from time to time.

Every year a national level common written exam is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) to recruit candidates to join the public sector banks. The IBPS recruitment are done on the basis of performance in the written test, Group discussion and interview. Minimum qualification to appear for the exam is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized college/university with 60% for science graduates and 55% for graduates in any streams and the age limit to appear for the exam is 21 years and maximum 30 years. The exam pattern in the IBPS written test is in two sections, first section would have objective type questions and the question will be on topics such as Reasoning, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, and computer knowledge. The second section will have descriptive type questions on English composition such as Essay's, Letter writing etc. Candidates should also know that there are negative marking for every wrong answer and 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. If a candidate clears the CWE (Common Written Examination) He/she will be called for group discussion followed by an interview. The Selection for the post of a Probationary Officer will be based on the Total Weighted Standard Score (TWS) in the Common Written Examination (CWE), and the marks scored in the interview and group discussion.

To clear the exam the most important thing to watch for is time. One needs to keep an eye on time while practicing question at home, Candidates can also refer to books from class 10 math which will help in solving question on Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning. In the English section try to gain basic knowledge of English Grammar and one can also go through the previous year's questions papers that are available on the internet. For General awareness make sure that you are thorough with the meaning of all the terms that are used in Indian Banking, Getting facts about Indian banks and Indian economy since last one year will also be quite helpful.
