Remote control helicopters are a miniaturized version of a full scale helicopter and are controlled via a handheld radio. These wonderful ‘toys’ come in different sizes, designs and also uses various sources of power. Their flying capabilities, uses and commercial applications are vast. Simple models can be bought at a toy store. The number, designs and types of models available are endless and for the first time user, deciding which one to buy can be daunting. For the new aviation enthusiast, starting small is the best option. This will not only help the “pilot” build his confidence in its complex mechanism but will also help him/her gain the necessary skills required to handle larger aircrafts. rnIf you are a first time user or have a limited budget and don’t want the hustle of constant maintenance, then one can buy an electric model as there are no fuel costs and parts are generally more affordable. These types of remote control helicopters are also much quieter and the fact they do not have any emissions means that they can be easily and safely used indoors. Gas and nitro fuelled models are a lot messier as they have to be fuelled before each flight and maintenance done at the end of the flight and repairing them is a difficult job. rnFor a beginner, the electric versions are the best option as they are light weight and are also the most user friendly. Gas fueled models should generally be used by people who have prior experience handling flying toys or for pilots who have had flying licenses. They are as close as you can get to the real thing but they are quite expensive due to the engine and variety of moving parts. Larger remote control helicopters create a lot of noise and smell so can only be used in large open spaces. For more affordable options one can choose between a toy and mini remote control helicopters. A mini helicopter is similar to its electric counterpart as it is also powered by a rechargeable battery but it is small enough for you to fly it in your living room. These things are easily available but they require a lot of practice to maneuver. They are also very fragile to handle. The easiest type of version to handle is the coaxial helicopter. These are built to stabilize themselves and so will be able to stand poor handling by a novice. When buying remote control helicopters, remember to select one that directly matches your skill level. The last thing you want to do is spend a fortune buying a model only to end up crash it during your first flight and have your money go down the drain. Start small and you can work your way up to fixed pitch helicopters which are usually used by professionals in competitions. Though they can be considerably more expensive than your average models, the flying experience is well worth the money. If well taken care of, they can give you years of fun.
