A good content layer makes a way for a successful web development by providing easy accessibility of information to the users. Therefore, it is important to make sure that at any means quality of content layer doesn’t lag behind. Here, the quality of content layer entails the way it is implemented in the web development codes. This incorporates everything that lies between the <body> tags.

An ideal content layer contains only the information that has to be communicated directly to the audience. This may include text, images or both. Of course, the displayed information must be in proper order and must not include any information about the look of the web page; this should be in presentation layer. So, the correct use of image and following proper structure in content layer are the building blocks of a successful web development.

Content Structure

There is a set structure to be followed for content layer using right html tags. Below are few basics to create right structure:

  • The title of the page must be enclosed in an <h1> tag, to make the highest-level heading on the web page.
  • The navigation code of the site should be in a <ul> tag, navigation code is an unordered list of items.
  • Avoid using an <iframe> whenever possible as Inline frames creates confusion for screenreading software and cause a mess while trying to navigate in between the pages with the [TAB] key.
  • Also avoid using formatting <table> tags. It should be used only to recognize tabular data like a financial balance sheet or any other data in excel sheet.
  • Don’t get driven by <div> tags. Whereas professionals have stopped using <table> tags, they have started replacing the tag with <div>s. The problem lies when a <div> does not represent a new content grouping, as it is not the correct way to use.

Using Images

As far as the uses of images are concerned, as per the principle of semantic design, non-content images like .gif files should not be included in the layer. If it is really needed, include images with Meta tags. The best way is to use <alt> to convey the purpose of the images to the users who are unable to view images. Sadly, some web developers add over detailed <alt> tags that ultimately remain of no use. It is important to understand that the information included in an <alt> tag will be prominent for a screen-reader and might read out loud. Hence, prefer a concise <alt> tag description.
