The Staff Selection Commission was developed as an attached department of Department of Personnel and Training, and consists of a Chairman, two members and one Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations. * The Commission also holds open competitive examinations for the recruitment in the posts of lower division clerks, assistants in different Central Government departments and ministries, Grade C and Grade D stenographers for Central Secretariat Stenographers Service, Central Excise inspectors, sub-inspectors in Central Police Organizations and Central Bureau of Investigation, Junior Engineers, divisional accountants, auditors, accountants under CAGI, tax assistant, statistical investigators, and section officer-audit and commercial audit
* The Commission also conducts departmental examination for the promotion of Group D to lower divisional clerks, LDC’s to Upper Divisional Clerks, and Grade D stenographers to Grade C stenographers
* Prepares schemes for recruitment in all Group B posts with a pay scale of Rs 9300 to 34800
* Conducts periodical typewriting tests in Hindi and English
