The Staff Selection Commission was developed as an attached department of Department of Personnel and Training, and consists of a Chairman, two members and one Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations. * To select and recruit most eligible candidates for all Group B posts in different departments and ministries of Government of India and their subordinate and attached offices, which are in the pay scale of a maximum of Rs.10,500 or below
* To select and recruit eligible candidates for all non-technical Group C vacancies in different departments and ministries of Government of India and their subordinate and attached offices, exclusive of those posts that are particularly exempted from the purview of Selection Commission
* To conduct SSC recruitment examinations and interviews, whenever necessary, for recruitment to different vacancies within its purview. The examinations are generally conducted at different centers, with the selected candidates being posted to their home region or state, as far as possible
* The Commission also holds open competitive examinations for the recruitment in the posts of lower division clerks, assistants in different Central Government departments and ministries, Grade C and Grade D stenographers for Central Secretariat Stenographers Service, Central Excise inspectors, sub-inspectors in Central Police Organizations and Central Bureau of Investigation, Junior Engineers, divisional accountants, auditors, accountants under CAGI, tax assistant, statistical investigators, and section officer-audit and commercial audit
* The Commission also conducts departmental examination for the promotion of Group D to lower divisional clerks, LDC’s to Upper Divisional Clerks, and Grade D stenographers to Grade C stenographers
* Prepares schemes for recruitment in all Group B posts with a pay scale of Rs 9300 to 34800
* Conducts periodical typewriting tests in Hindi and English
