Safety Tips for Kids in Home
Written by Harry Yadav
Babies are the most curious generation of human in the whole universe. They want to taste, feel and experience everything that makes them curious. This curiosity is no doubt good, but babies also face hazardous consequences because of their curiosity. It is an incident of just few days ago when my neighborhood Shreya, a three year old kid, was hospitalized due to electric shock. Later I came to know that out of her curiosity, Shreya inserted her fingers on the socket and thus got a strong electric shock. She was immediately taken to the nearby hospital and now she is in the ICU.
Every year, a good percentage of kids faces fatal injurious in their household only. As parents, we always want to provide our kids a safe and secure environment. We start taking security measures even before the baby comes to this earth. We sometime could not identify the hidden dangers. Items like screw driver, electric ware, or even a soft toy can be dangerous for kids. Many researchers proved that soft toys catches fire very rapidly and thus can cause great harm to kids. Thus sharp objects should be kept at a distance from the kids. It’s not that only sharp objects like knives can be dangerous for kids. Any household item can be turned to a hazardous piece in case of babies. Parents, as the guardians, sometime ignore small things that can cause great harm to the kids.
There are some suggestions that parents can follow in their home for the safety of their kids. These are briefly discussed below:-
1. Cosmetics and personal care products like face wash, nail products, hair remover, and baby oil must be kept away from kids. It is found in one study that every year, several kids under the age of 5 experience severe stomach and indigestion problems due to these. Babies sometime take these as food items and eat them up that causes such stomach problems.
2. Moreover, prescription drugs such as heart and blood pressure medications, antidepressants, sleeping pills, diabetes medications, pain medications, and time-release medications should be kept at a distance from kids.
3. Empty cold drink cans, metal bottle cap or broken plastic toys should be thrown in the bin only so that kids do not have an access to these. If they get these, they may feel like these are play items and start playing with these items.
4. Even the most thorough childproofing is no substitute for supervision. Be extra vigilant when visiting the house of a friend or relative, particularly if it hasn't been childproofed.
5. Kids sometime can smell the danger faster than the adults. So whenever children talk about a particular danger, parents need to listen to them.
6. Being available and taking time to really know and listen to your children helps build feelings of safety and security.
Though there are various things that parents need to take care of even in their home, but a close and constant supervision can stop many dangers to happen. Kids above 5 year of age should at least know their full name, address and phone number so that in case of any emergency, the parents can be contacted.
