No doubt, Sun is the ultimate source of energy on Earth. By installing solar panels at your idle rooftop, you can not only save your monthly electricity expenses but can also earn a good amount. As solar panels are getting cheaper day by day and looking at huge benefits and scope of solar power, the government is also stressing on more development of solar technology, its implementation, and execution on a mission scale – to meet its ambitious target of generating more than 40 GW of power from solar rooftop projects. Let’s discuss how
Analyze your rooftop’s solar potential: Before choosing any available solar option, you have to first analyze for an approximate amount of saving that you can achieve from your rooftop. Many stakeholders have developed solar calculators for providing an overview. You can calculate your saving at click here and consult any service provider for the installation of the solar power system.
The solar power system can be broadly categorized into two system
1. On-Grid/ Grid-Tied
2. OFF Grid or Grid alone system
In On-Grid or Grid-tied system, the solar power system is connected to a local main electricity grid. During the optimum production of solar electricity, your load can run on solar power. In case of any deficit, electricity will be drawn off from a local electricity grid. In the case of excess solar electricity production, it can be either stored in batteries or can be provided to local electric feed while OFF Grid or Grid alone system is favorable in case of the unavailability of any grid feed.
The energy difference can be measured from any of the two type of meter system
1. Gross Metering: In this, the entire energy generated from the solar power system is feed to the utility grid and amount is measured. On the basis of the amount proportionate feed-incentives can be taken.
2. Net Metering: In this, the energy difference of energy drawn off and feed into local grid is taken into account. In the case of excessive feeding, monetary benefits can be achieved.
For availing more benefits, the residential consumer should choose net metering system.
GROSS METERING AND NET METERING SYSTEM AND POLICIES IN UTTAR PRADESH
Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has recently issued a new draft governing the net metering of surplus generated by rooftop solar in Uttar Pradesh that governs all related rules and regulations for rooftop solar panel installation. Similarly, other state electricity boards have also published their regulations.
The draft mandates the capacity of grid-connected rooftop system not to exceed 2MWh and not less than 1KWh.
In the case, customer chooses option of gross metering, the entire generated power generated from rooftop solar system to the grid at interconnected points while in case of net metering, only the surplus will be feed.
The draft also consists of a provision of mutual sale and purchase of electricity through peer-to-peer transaction in a secure and reliable way with proper accounting and tracking record using Blockchain technology.
