Neurotransmitters - types of chemicals are released at the end of these cells. These neurotransmitters carry messages from the endings of one nerve cell to the nerve cell body of another. This messaging system does not work properly in the brain of a person who has schizophrenia.

There is no physical or laboratory test that can absolutely diagnose it. A psychiatrist, the doctor will make a diagnosis based on the patient's clinical symptoms.
