Selecting An Electrical Contractor
Written by Nick Rex
Selecting a qualified electrical contractor for your home or business can be a challenge in itself. You might have difficulty describing your problem and may be confused by words that the experts will use. There is a way to help you have as much information to help you select an electrical contractor though.
Most electrical contractors are specialists to one degree or another so it helps if you can identify your particular need before you call them. Is your need for new construction or a major renovation? A service or repair of existing electrical items? Is the work needed for your home or a small business or a larger company? Do you think this represents an emergency or are you concerned about a dangerous situation? Do you require specialist systems such as a fire alarm or security or sound, video, wired or wireless network?
Now when you ask yourself these questions you can select the right electrical contractor for your needs. You can also tell the electrical contractor and describe which kind of service that you need.
You now need to find an electrical contractor that is technically proficient, financially stable and has a thorough understanding of your business too.
On the technical side, the two most important considerations for any electrical installation are electrical safety and electrical system reliability. So it is critical that the electricians that directly perform the work and the contractors that employ them follow recognized standards of safety and quality.
You will be looking for an electrical contractor that is sound financially and has a good reputation. Make sure you talk to customers in your industry that have done business with the electrical contractor. Ask for and check references.
Finally, inquire about the contractor's warranty and insurance, and get it in writing. Does the contractor guarantee that the work will be installed to meet code? Will the contractor correct work that does not meet applicable standards? Insist on a written estimate and a copy of the contractor's insurance. This has to be done for your peace of mind.
