SLEEP FOR THE HEALTH OF IT
By JJ Virgin.
I've always said that eating right and working out isn't enough when it comes to advising your clients on how to maintain excellent health.
Sleep is key...especially for a good ticker.
A new study from Warwick Medical School in England indicated that women who slept fewer than five hours a night had increased risk factors for cardiovascular problem. The findings didn't hold true for men and scientists feel that this is because lack of sleep causes the female hormones to go crazy.
How can you get your clients to sleep more? A few suggestions:
*Have them set an alarm an hour before they need to go to bed. That's wind down time where stimulating activities such as phone calls and the computer aren't going to happen anymore. Instead, advise them to wind down with a cup of herbal tea or hot bath.
*They should invest in a slow book that lulls them into relaxation, but don't watch network cop shows or even the news. That just revs your brain up again and works against going to sleep.
*Make your bedroom into your sanctuary. Invest in the cozy sheets and comforter. Take the TV out of there. Make sure the room is dark and cool for solid sleep.
*Work on getting pets/kids and other wigglers out of your bed. You need 7-9 hours of unbroken sleep to go through all the proper sleep cycles. Work on new sleeping methods for those who wake you during the night.
*If you're prone to a 2 a.m. bathroom break then stop drinking a few hours before bedtime. It's not necessary for you to wake up to go to the bathroom and limiting drinks can help.
*Remind your clients that even a night or two of insufficient sleep can affect their overall health and eventually could hinder their heart health. Tell them not to feel guilty about hitting the hay early because what's more important -- one more load of laundry or their health?

A first podiatry appointment is far less clinical than most people expect. It typically starts with a conversation about your medical history and the specific problem you're dealing with, followed by a look at your footwear, how you stand and walk, and a hands-on assessment of the affected area.
