Social networking is a key factor in website optimization. Social networking websites have the ability to either make or break a business. The top social networking websites are: Facebook, twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn. I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said that Facebook is the most important social networking website, but I said it anyway. If your website gets many social shares it says a few things about your website:

  • Your site is active
  • Your site is current
  • Your site is invested in the needs of your audience.

Search engines are made to help people find what they are looking for, simple right? So what does a website with a thousand shares on Facebook mean? It means: not only do people find what they are looking for when they visit your website but they like it so much that they share and recommend it to their friends.

  • Viral content: What is it?

Valuable content: what makes your content valuable?
Valuable, quality content really comes down to one thing, social shares.

How do you make your content “viral”?
How does the NY Times have so many followers and readers? They have well written, eloquent, or even humorous articles with interesting topics that engage their readers. That is viral content.

How do you benefit from viral contentr
Increase in SEO signalsr
Massive gain in amount of social sharesr
Content creation of value for your customer base

Social media is yet another link building tool and one of many SEO techniques, especially with viral content. No matter how much you pay for advertisement on Google it can never compare to having quality or viral content. Viral content makes your site more valuable to search engines. It also makes social media connections a lot easier to build rather than paying for it. Even when you do pay for it can never be better than the real thing. For instance when you pay for friends on Facebook you can always tell they really aren’t your friends. Your friends have recurring avatars for their profile pictures without any viral content on their pages. In conclusion, SEO and social media go hand in hand and the best thing to remember when multiplying these two factors is quality takes time, meaning don’t pay for what you can do yourself, because nobody knows your business better than you.
