Soda vs Alkaline Water
Written by David Forsyth
There are three major problems caused by consuming soda everyday, which is; acid pH, high sugar contents (both natural and artificial) and high caffeine contents.
For just one can of soda, the pH is about 2.5. This makes soda the most acidic beverage you can consume. To give an idea of just how acidic a can of soda is, let's compare it with a battery. Battery acid has a pH of 1. The pH level of soda is almost the same as vinegar. But you don't see people consuming batteries as well as vinegar to wash down their lunch or dinner, do you?
The acidic pH encourages bones and teeth erosion. It is similar to how acid causes rusts in metal or iron. The more soda you drink, the more calcium is leached from your bones. This causes weak bones that can lead to Osteoporosis. Tooth decay, periodontal disease and gingivitis can also be caused by drinking soda. But we don’t notice the acid content, of course. This is because the sugar in the conceals it's existence fairly well.
The sugar from soft drinks can cause nasty effects on the body. In one experiment, the sugar from one soft drink damaged the white blood cells’ ability to ingest and kill bacteria for up to 7 hours. Sugar also aids in the dissolving of tooth enamel and increases the chance of weight gain. Each additional soda consumed causes the risk of obesity to go up 1.6 times.
One would think that diet soda would be better. But most are not aware that diet soda is even worse. Most diet sodas use aspartame sweeteners. Just one litre of a beverage sweetened with aspartame can cause the production of about 56 milligrams of methanol, a dangerous and poisonous compound.
By drinking a few can of sodas a day, you increase the methanol production up to 32 times the EPA limit. Saccharin, another artificial sweetener is 300 to 500 times as sweet as regular sugar. However, animal studies have shown that saccharin is a possible cause for cancer, producing carcinogens and affecting the bladder as well as female reproductive organs.
Caffeine in soda is also dangerous to health. While it is known that caffeine can have beneficial qualities when taken in very low doses, but with soft drinks and coffee, the dose is much higher.
Caffeine is especially dangerous for women, as it increases PMS symptoms and lowers the ability to reproduce. Just by drinking one cup of caffeinated beverage a day, the chance of conceiving a baby is decreased by 50%.
The best way to combat the problems that originates from soft drinks is to stop drinking them. Our bodies are made up of about 70% water, so drinking water is the best thing you could do to replenish the water in your body.
While water is good for you, there's scientifically enhanced water that's even better for your body. They're known as alkaline water. The reason alkaline water is good for your health is that it not only hydrate you, but it also helps reduce harm from being done to your body.
Alkaline water contains antioxidants which help fight off the free radicals that causes ageing and degenerative disease. The best part is, it also provides the body with minerals and vitamins needed by your body.
