Being an effective parent can sometimes be a daunting task - being charged with the responsibility of caring for another life is a great responsibility, after all. Throw in sleepless nights, plenty of temper tantrums, and unexpected expenses, and the average parent is often left feeling confused and overwhelmed sometimes.

Children react better to positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement. Parents also often overlook when a child does something well but tend to get angry and hand out punishments when a child does something wrong. A much better environment would be where the parents praise and reward the child for doing something well. Children are much more eager to obtain rewards than they are to avoid punishment.

Parenting is one of the hardest jobs there is. You will want to remain firm with your children, but it is just as important to be fair, honest and, most importantly, consistent. Once you have a good handle on these concepts, then you have a good foundation for effective parenting techniques.

If you're away on a trip without your child, make sure you call them at least once a day to tell them you miss them. This lets the child know that you love them and haven't forgotten about them. You don't want your child to feel like they're not as important as your friends or your job are.

When you have two children, it is important for you to take the time with both children so that the children do not feel like you have favoritism. Children often feel like parents love one child more than the other child, but those feelings can be avoided through dedication and determination.

To encourage breast feeding in an infant, offer your child plenty of skin to skin contact. Skin to skin contact makes a young infant feel content. It also allows them to smell Mom's milk and so, want to breast feed more. The feeling of bonding and closeness that skin to skin contact facilitates is also great for Mom, as it reduces stress.

While the advice of close friends and family can be very helpful, you don't need to listen to the unsolicited tips from every aunt, cousin and coworker. Of course they may mean well, but at the end of the day the child is yours. The same goes for parenting tips from any other source, take them with a grain of salt.

A great parenting tip is to never blab to your child's siblings or other people when your child divulges a secret to you. Not being able to keep a secret is a surefire way to lose your child's trust. Unless the secret requires intervening, you should just keep it between you and your child.

A great parenting tip is to accompany your small children if they decide to go trick or treating. Young children definitely need a chaperone or parent with them when they go trick or treating because it can get hectic. You should be there for them to make sure they are safe at all times.

Consistency is essential when parenting children. Children need to know what is expected of them every time. If you are not consistent with your expectations, it could cause your child to get confused and not know what it expected of them. Keeping expectations constant makes life easier for both the parent and the child.

Learning how to be an effective parent, and how to strengthen your relationship with your child, is a lifelong process. This article has presented numerous tried and true suggestions for developing healthy patterns of parenting, and we hope that they will be helpful to you as you engage in the process of developing yourself as a parent.
