A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they are going to ‘win’ their divorce. The problem with this mindset is that there are no winners in divorce. Divorce is not a place for winning, it is just a place for various degrees of losing. In that sense, I suppose that the spouse who loses the least in the divorce is the winner. In divorce, there are a lot of other factors to consider when thinking about the ultimate outcome. For example, paying your bills from month to month or removing your spouse’s name from the titles of ownership so that you can enjoy sole ownership of the property items you are awarded in the divorce decree. In a lot of divorces, the spouses do not care about paying their bills and they do not care whose name is on the title – all they really care about is revenge. Their A-1 priority is to make each other miserable and those spouses seem destined to duke it out in divorce court litigation until they both run out of money or until the end of time (whichever one comes first). If you are like most, your divorce is not a knock down drag out, winner take all slugfest. On the same token your divorce is far from amicable. If this IS you, then read the rest of this article. In the rest of this article, you will find a list of four tips for helping you stay focused during the divorce. In other words, the list below is a list of four things for you to consider that will help you keep your priorities straight during the divorce. Number One: Think About The Children’s Best Interest. This one is commonsense. Unfortunately during a contested divorce commonsense is uncommon. Whatever decisions you make with regard to your employment, living arrangement, and custody arrangement, make sure that you think about the children’s best interest. Number Two: Think About Your Future Relations With The Ex. If you and your ex do not have children together and you want to use ‘scorched Earth’ tactics during the divorce then by all means go ahead and do so. If you and your ex have children though, be mindful that you will have to communicate with the ex about the children until they reach the age of eighteen. Tip Number Three: Your Future Happiness. A lot of spouses get so caught up in ‘the game’ of divorce that they neglect their own happiness and well being. During the divorce process and especially during the negotiation stages of the divorce, give some thought to your future happiness and refuse to commit to settlement terms that are going to deprive you of future happiness. Tip Number Four: The Transition From Couple To Single Person. Making the adjustment from living as a couple to living as a single person can be complicated. During the divorce process and certainly during the negotiation stages of the divorce, give some serious thought to how you are going to make that transition as smooth as possible on yourself.
