What is anxiety?

Anxiety comes from the Latin word “anxious” meaning a condition of agitation and distress. Anxiety can be distinguished from fears in several ways. Your fear is usually directed toward some concrete, object or situation. Anxiety is more internal then external Often times you cannot even describe what you feel anxious about. Anxiety seems to be a response to some vague feeling that perhaps something bad may be happening Sometimes you can be anxious about losing control, the possibility of loosing your job or that someone close to you may be dying. You feel apprehension, uneasy, agitated, nervous most of the time. You feel that it will never go away and you life will be unmanageable. Feeling of hopelessness and helplessness may prevail.

Anxiety can appear at different levels of severity. From a slight feeling of uneasiness to a full blown panic attack with symptoms of rapid heart beat, disorientation and terror. When you feel distressed about what can happen in a particular situation that is called anticipatory anxiety. In its milder form it is indistinguishable from worrying.
