Studying Abroad - How to Prepare For the Journey?
Written by Saba Salim
Studying abroad gives you the chance to visit a new country and give a new direction to your life. You learn to stand up on your feet and explore new things that you may never have heard about in your home country. But after that initial excitement wears off, you may experience a cultural shock. The main reason for a cultural shock is because you are not prepared for this rewarding experience. Also if you have no friends or family in this new place; you start to feel homesick and start missing everything from your mother’s delicious food to the long lectures of disapproval your father used to give when you did something wrong back home. When you feel homesick, you mood also becomes grumpy and lethargic. You end up feeling miserable throughout your day whether you are attending a lecture or eating your dinner. It is very important to prepare for your time studying abroad in a foreign country before you leave home. First of all, in today’s tech-savvy world it is very easy for to keep in contact with your loved ones even if they are living on the other side of the globe. Gone are the days when people used to write long letters and wait for days to receive an answer from. Today you can communicate instantly with people living in any part of the world. Technology solutions like cellular calls and video conferencing are both cheap and very easy to use. You might be out of sight, but using technology you are never out of mind of your loved ones. But when you are in Rome, you should do as Romans do. Take your visit to a new country as an adventure that may never happen again. Make new friends, learn a new language and tackle any challenge with a fierce determination. Search about the culture and traditions of the place you are going to study in so you are not completely alien to their ways when you actually reach the place. If you are going to a place where they do not speak a language you know then it is very important to at least learn a few phrases of the new language. Even if they understand English but have a different native language, it will help you during your stay if you can understand and talk a little bit in the native tongue. The main thing is to remain positive and take every challenge in the stride as it comes. With an optimistic approach to life, you will be finished with your studying abroad course in no time and back home with all the memories of this wonderful experience.
