I interviewed William H. Draper III, a major high-technology venture capitalist [former Managing Partner of Sutter Hill Ventures] and former President of the U. S. Import-Export Bank under President Reagan, at his Draper-Richards, LP venture capital headquarters office in downtown San Francisco, California. William Henry Draper III is the son of banker, diplomat, and US Army Major General William Henry Draper, Jr.

After William Henry Draper, Jr. promotion to US Army Major General, he become the US Under-Secretary of War in 1947. WHD, Jr. then became the first Under- Secretary of the Army, from 1947 to 1949. According the Bill Draper III, when he was in school and college, his "father spent most of his time in Washington running the Marshall Plan, as a Major General in the U. S. Army."

Bill Draper's mother died when he was 14 and while he certainly missed her, he did not view her loss as "tragic adversity" in his life. He expressed that he had "experienced a feeling of freedom and independence after her death." Young Bill was sort of on his own, even though was living a nice home in Scarsdale, New York with his older sisters, whild Dad was mostly in Washington, DC.

Bill said that his mother's death may have opened up his "opportunities to mix it up with my peers and understand from their point of view. That was quite another aspect I hadn't thought of until just now, but I think that might have been part of it."

William Draper III attended Yale University along with George Herbert Walker Bush. Bill Draper graduated a year after George H. W. Bush in 1950. Draper like Bush is a member of the exclusive secret society Skull and Bones. After graduating from Yale University, Bill joined the US Army, went through OCS to become an Officer and was then stationed in Korea. After serving in the US Army, Bill Draper earned his MBA from the Harvard School of Business.

Bill commented that his experience in the U. S. Army taught him a great deal about leadership and dealing with adversity. He shared "I learned a lot there about leadership, going through OCS . . . being a platoon leader [in the 82nd Airborne] going to Korea and living in adversity . . . on the front line and [the] coldest winter I've ever spent was in Korea, living in a foxhole." Bill never asked his troops to do anything he was not personally willing to do. He has lead by example both in battle and business.

William Henry Draper III was a co-founder in 1962 of the venture capital firm Draper & Johnson Investment Company and the venture capital firm Sutter Hill Ventures. William Draper III was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to be the Chairman of the United States Export-Import Bank in 1981.

After leaving as United States Export-Import Bank Chairman, William Draper III was appointed as Administrator and CEO of the United Nations Development Programme in 1985 (He focused on the Indian Sub-Continent). Bill Draper is currently the Managing Director of the high technology Venture Capital firm, Draper-Richards, LP, headquartered in San Francisco, California.
