Putting Off the Threat of Fire

Back in 2015 when I was preparing for IOSH and NEBOSH Certification examinations, my instructor shared a case study in the class. It was about how a fire erupted in a certain commercial complex and caused deaths of around 67 people, injuries to numerous and damages to property.

The owners of the complex stated that it was merely an accident, but an in-depth investigation revealed that the fire was caused due to faulty electricity wires leading to a short circuit. The fire spread further coming in contact with flammable objects in the surrounding. The building did not have a safe fire escape route or a refuge area, and neither did it have fire detection or fire-fighting equipment. Thus concluding that the fire wasn’t merely an accident, but was a result of negligence towards safety measures.

This scenario explicitly narrates why safety and security, be it at a workplace or a public space, is of paramount importance. Negligence towards even a minute aspect of fire safety can lead to disasters.
