Shredding is an incredibly important operation for any business whether or not it is admin heavy. The question most commonly asked by large companies is whether to pay for mobile shredding or provide an in-house confidential shredding facility. Both have their own merits and it will largely depend on what sort of company you are a part of. One of the first major points in this is taking into consideration operational compliance with ISO14001. Companies that hold this certification are audited regularly to test their compliance with environmental regulations, which is incredibly important when disposing of documents or even hard drives/physical storage utilities. The process of applying for an effective in house shredding facility would require an extensive operations manual and process list which can be incredibly costly to and sometimes difficult attain in terms of consultancy. Once operational compliance is assured, you will have to invest in a shredding/data destruction facility. These are usually heavy duty industrial standard machines which come with a high price tag. Also it is important to keep your waste output low; the advantageous factor of hiring a mobile shredding company to come on-site is that all of the post-shredding waste is disposed of by your service provider. In terms of data destruction, you can purchase a high quality magnet to completely sterilize your used hard drives of all data. But unfortunately due to WEEE regulation, the post-wiped hard drives cannot be simply disposed of in the trash. The WEEE directive is put in place to reduce landfill sites and ensure safe disposal of non-functioning office equipment. Take into consideration your preferred recycling company’s corporate social responsibility scheme, as it is at least in your interest that this equipment finds a new home or is disposed of in a safe, responsible manner. A lot of companies can masquerade as recyclers purely to use your discarded equipment to pull a profit, this is most certainly something to watch out for. Developing an on-site data destruction facility is quite a daunting and costly task, which sometimes proves hard to manage even for large corporations. Unless you are ready for a serious financial investment in consideration to the long term admin pileup of your business, you will find it far more cost effective to hire a respectable mobile shredding company to perform all of your data destruction on site. Along with this you will be provided with a certification that all of your documents were disposed of under correct operational compliance.
