The Discipline of Doing Two Hard Things Well
When you try to develop two demanding qualities at once — strength and endurance, in this case — your body can't fully adapt to both if you throw them at it back to back. Exercise science calls this the interference effect: cram a hard run and a heavy lift too close together, and neither gets the recovery it needs to actually improve. You end up busy, tired, and stuck.
The fix isn't intensity. It's spacing. Give six to eight hours between a hard lift and a hard run — or better, put them on separate days entirely. Respect that boundary, and both qualities grow. Ignore it, and you're just accumulating fatigue with nothing to show for it.
There's a broader lesson here worth sitting with: real growth in any area rarely comes from doing more, faster, with less rest. It comes from respecting the order and the space between efforts. The person who paces two demanding goals thoughtfully almost always outperforms the one who tries to force both at full intensity, all the time, with no recovery built in.
Discipline isn't just showing up. It's showing up with a plan smart enough to let your effort actually count for something.
I laid out the full spacing rule, a sample weekly training split, and the recovery habits that make it stick in this guide: Running and Lifting on the Same Day
