Owning a racehorse is an investment, but the returns can certainly make up for it. There's nothing like getting into a race for a horse at the races, and every owner dreams of seeing his colors in the winner's circle of the most lucrative races worldwide. However, racehorses might be expensive to maintain and many will never keep up with them. Seeing the economics of competing is essential to make a new stable a victorious venture, and dreams must be tempered with knowledge of the daily costs associated with having a horse. The first cost to think about when starting up a ranch is the cost of a thoroughbred. There are many ways to get an animal, at every level of its development and at every cost bracket. The least expensive way is to have a horse. The negative to buying claimers is that such horses are often at the lowest rung of competing with a reason. Investors will, in all likelihood, not be buying a prodigious winner in a claiming race, but many animals strengthen up dramatically with new trainers and continue on. Other options imply buying a broodmare and bearing the foal on a ranch, or buying a baby or barely older horse at one of the many auctions held annually. Racehorses at auction can cost in the neighborhood of $20,000 to a million, given their pedigree and record. Once an owner has the animal, the primary concern will probably be to get back the cash put in on it. Before that happens, though, the animal needs to run in races and be kept healthy to run several times per annum. Most owners rely on the services of a trainer to maintain horses and at on top of their game. A typical trainer can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per day. Considering feeding and vet care, the common racehorse costs about thirty thousand every year to maintain. It should also be kept in mind that horses do not get a competition's full prize and that a number of riders and trainers get a low stake from all winnings. Prestigious racehorses also incur shipping costs. Because of this, getting a competitive horse that is strong enough to have expenses minimized and able enough to pay for itself might be hard, and the objective of most stables is to meet expensives. It is simple, from time to time, to see the pageantry and excitement of days like the Grand Slams and forget the basic, day-to-day claimers that are the reality of many stables. The high expense of maintaining a string of animals is why a lot of owners put cash into just part of an animal. This helps to lower expenses and lessen the influence of a disappointing purchase. In the end, it is certainly likely to make a profit breeding animals, but it takes a shrewd business mind to do so.
