Television history, in its entirety, is really too deep and historical to enter here, so instead of trying and failing to cover everything that happened in television history from the beginning, we will focus in three of the most significant moments in television history.

Cathode ray tube

Television had existed before the cathode ray tube in the form of mechanical televisions, but it was not until the cathode ray tube that the technology that would eventually become modern television really took off. The cathode ray tube allowed for faster image processing and cheaper televisions, meaning that consumers were much more willing to spend the hard-earned money on a television. Today, the cathode ray tube is not really used in the creation of the modern Toshiba high definition television, but without the tube, the television could never have been more than a technological novelty for serious collectors.

Cable TV

Today, cable is just one option among many, but since the 1950s, early 1960s, when all you had was a handful of broadcast channels, cable television was a revolution. When cable television appeared and became more popular throughout the 1960s and 1970s, it enabled the creation of dozens of channels and syndicated programming nationwide. Cable television offered not only more programming, but a broader scope than programming could be. With cable television, you can have content for all tastes. You could watch the local news at the same time that your neighbors watch an independent film festival. You could watch Sanford and Son at the same time that your wife was watching a cooking show in the kitchen. Cable television expanded not only our notion of what television could be, but also what television programming could be.

Web / TV integratio

This is one of the most exciting developments in television history and the development we are currently experiencing: the integration of the web and television. As with cathode ray tube and electronic televisions, it is difficult to determine the exact year of this development, as the movement takes time to spread throughout the world. However, the integration of Internet content and functionality with television is really changing the way we watch television. One of the most interesting developments is that there is no longer a barrier between the content provider and the audience. In the past, you had to watch what the networks put on television. Today, if you are sitting watching YouTube videos, you can grab your camera and contribute something that has as much chance of gaining a wide audience as anything else on television. HBO and Showtime producers would kill for having ratings like the viral hits of Antoine Dodson and Angry Video Game Nerd. When you sit in front of your Toshiba television today, you are watching crystal clear television programming from top and underground content providers, and that makes this the most exciting time to watch the channel.
