Mutable energy with the Earth element gives us the sign Virgo. Virgo uses the Mutability to deal with life’s physical needs. Busy with the maintenance of life and the well being of the body. The Earth element gives structure and form to the Mutable quality; therefore it can go into detail, organize and search for information that helps in dealing with life and the understanding of it. The restless and searching aspects of Mutability could go into looking for different or better ways in doing things or searching for solutions. With a tendency for perfection, because of its need to do better and improve; this trait can often turns to self-criticism and a critical eye is often turned onto others. This sign will see a flaw a mile off and even with something of beauty or that which others see as perfect, they will see a defect. This mutable quality can never let them rest as it always searches for improvement and flaws,if taken to extreme.

This sense of ‘not perfect yet’ can keep them humble and being the workers of the Zodiac, they never stop laboring. The Earth element can make them prudent and practical and the mutable can cause them to be finicky. It can be the most helpful and self-sufficient sign and this tendency for perfection can make them skilful at their chosen art or profession.

Example, a friend of mine who has Virgo on the ascendant agrees that she can see a flaw a mile off, however; this trait became a great asset in her profession as a nurse. She often asked the doctor to take another look at a patient as something was not right. Her suspicions were often correct. A nurse like this is worth their weight in gold! This emphasizes the positive side of this sign so well.

Mutable Earth is not the easiest of combinations, as Mutable is about flexibility and change, whereas Earth is more solid and firm. However, the mutable can help change earth by giving it a variety of new forms, thereby always looking for improvement. Earth can help to give stability or structure to Mutable restlessness, giving it focus.

Virgo the Virgin

Its symbol of the Virgin is an interesting one. For the root meaning of the Virgin is a self contained being. Virgo’s like to be self-sufficient and independent which is the motivation behind being concerned about health issues. They have a fear or worry about being dependent on others, as Virgo likes to serve but does not like to be served upon. No one, in their opinion, can do it as well as themselves. If they become ill then they would need to be looked after, hence their anxiety about health. This can also shoot them in the foot as the worry and anxiety could actually bring on health issues!

Ruled by Mercury

Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo but differs because Gemini is an Air sign. This gives the tendency to be interested in all sorts of information. Virgo is more discerning; being a sign of harvest it sorts the wheat from the chaff. Storing and using information that is useful, disregarding the rest as not that important. A sign that strives for perfection, it will use Mercury to analyze and to understand, especially from its Earthy view. This sign brings body and mind together, showing again the connection with health issues.

Virgo in your Birth Chart

The house where Virgo sits in your Birth Chart will indicate the area where you could have traits of being critical, fussy, analytical, discriminating or hard working. It could also show where you seek to serve. Planets in this sign will emphasize this area and the Virgo traits will rub off in them is some form.

The Heart of Virgo

Virgo is the sign that strives for perfection, the worker of the Zodiac that needs to serve. An unassuming sign that gets on with the job, perfecting its skills as it looks for its field of service. Self contained, critical and independent. At its heart it searches for its own perfection, its soul and purpose.
