Essential Oils:
A Common-Sense Approach to Health Living

Dana Young has been involved in every step of the cultivation and manufacturing of essential oils, from seed selection through distillation and most of the steps in between. Dana has also traveled the world studying with scientists, physicians and other specialists, learning about the chemistry of essential oils and their health and wellness benefits.
He attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, and studied speech and hearing therapy. After leaving college, he managed an essential oil herb farm and for two and a half years he built greenhouses, planted crops and distilled crops, and performed tests. He has been involved in every aspect of essential oils from soil preparation to the finished product. His background has given him a comprehensive understanding of how essential oils function.
He used the oils for the first time on his shoulder when He owned a fencing company. He pounded 2500 steel posts by hand, which caused bursitis to set in. In turn, he couldn’t use his shoulder for the next six months. Within fifteen minutes of using essential oils on his shoulder for the first time, he was able to lift his arm and put his shirt on without any pain. He was amazed that such a profound change had taken place within his body so quickly. He was pain free for several days until he went back to work and then the bursitis quickly returned. This experience made him realize that while repetitive actions could damage our bodies and essential oils can heal and regenerate, we must also change our behavior for lasting benefits.

His dramatic recovery prompted him to learn more about essential oils. A given essential oil has between 200 and 800 chemical constituents created from sunshine and the air and nutrients in the soil from where the plant was grown. Plants are organic chemical factories and essential oils are the life-force of aromatic plants. Three of the basic elements a plant has are oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon, which also happen to be the same building blocks of the human body. Thus, the oils have many health-enhancing properties that also benefit people.
Human bodies are stimuli response mechanisms. Whenever you use your senses, such as sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste, your body is responding to a stimulus. Essential oils work by eliciting certain stimuli that trigger the body’s response to heal. Essential oils first affect people through their sense of smell, which is the most direct sense. Scent information goes directly to the hypothalamus, which is the source of all moods, emotions, creativity, and motivation. Some scents can enhance emotional balance simply by inhaling them.
An effective assessment system to determine your body’s needs is to match essential oils to the seven body systems: structure, bone, nerve, muscle, circulation, tendon and cartilage, and emotion.
The first oil is a blend, which targets the structure of the body and relaxes it. The body must be relaxed, along with the nerve endings, in order for healing to occur. Once the body is relaxed, realignment and repair can begin. The second oil, another blend, assesses bone function and assists in the mending of bone damage.
The third, helichrysum, is an oil that assists in neurological nfunction and nerve damage. Next is marjoram oil, which assesses muscular function and can be used for many things, from premenstrual cramping to muscle spasms. Cypress oil is next for improving circulation. Sixth is lemongrass oil, for correcting tendon and cartilage problems and can be used for knees, shoulders, elbows, fingers, and wrists. The last oil is geranium, which helps with emotions.
The oils should be applied in proper order to the foot, assessing the body’s reaction at each stage. Since the foot has the largest number of pores on the body, 8,000 per square inch, absorption will be faster than applying the oils to any other area. After each application, chart any stimulus reaction and apply the essential oils directly to the problem area, whether structural, bone nerve, or emotional.
The chemical components in the essential oils are the raw materials your body needs for regeneration and provide all the tools needed for the body to heal itself.
Essential oils are nature’s gifts and a common-sense approach to healthy living.
