The Importance of Social Media Monitoring
Written by Brant Potter
Social media monitoring can be a simple, yet interesting exercise once you get to know about the basics. Monitoring the social media is important for any online business. It gives your business publicity and makes it the topic of talk at the online discussion forums or in mainstream conversations as passing references. Today, more and more businesses are capitalizing on the power of the social media in marketing their business. ‘Social chatter’ is as much important today as word of mouth publicity and hence you should talk about your brand through online discussions, quizzes, polls and brand sharing FAQs.
Monitoring the social media is technically known as social media engagement. Once you have learned the art of social media monitoring, you will reap the benefits. There are basically 3 steps of doing this:
Use Logical Searching: Learn how to proceed with your online searches by updating yourself on facts like using ‘or’ to separate two keywords. Search them simultaneously on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter. However, this logic is not to be applied BackType, the platform which helps brands understand the commercial essence of social media. You need to be well-informed about search engines and develop your searches accordingly.
List Prospective Keywords: Create a list of the possible keywords that relate to your product, market trends, brand name and other market operators including everything you can think of. This might give you multiple search results which can be sorted according to your requirements later on. This will sieve through the social clutter and help in better social media organization.
Create a Monitoring Plan: It is the most important aspect of social media monitoring. As you come up with the possible keywords, you start getting a clear picture of everything that requires monitoring. This is the time to organize these aspects. This will prevent confusing your brand related information with competitor news. The different monitoring plans include:
- Brand Monitoring: This includes the product- and brand-related keywords.
- Competitor Monitoring: This includes the keywords that are relevant to your competitors and their current news and events.
- Market Monitoring: This includes the keywords pertaining to market scenario. If you sell sports apparel, your keywords will include latest designs, sports apparel trends, market share and more.
Social media monitoring not only allows you to gather relevant information related to your competitors and brand, but also enables image management. The social media acts as your business’ PR, strategizing your online reputation management. By engaging the audience in interesting discussions and conversations with the required value addition, you can contribute to social media marketing. If your content is appealing, contains news and adds value to others, they will share it with their friends, giving your business the much-required exposure.
