The Most Common Metals Used In Electroplating
Written by Lora Davis
Silver is known to be very close to being a noble metal but sulfur sometimes causes pitting and deterioration on its surface. One of the other important features of silver is its power as a very good conductor of electricity among all metals and silver plating service ensures that it coast semiconductors as well as other electrical devices. Just like gold, silver is quite expensive and that is why it is used less commonly for economical purposes.
In the metal finishing industry, silver plating service doesn’t necessarily mean that it takes second place; silver, a white colored semi-precious metal has many benefits making it a favorite in electroplating services. One reason it is preferred is the fact that silver is an excellent conductor of electricity in addition to being the best heat conductor among all materials that are used in the electroplating service. It is because of these benefits and its reasonable cost in comparison to platinum or gold that silver plating service is given such prominence.
There are about three means through which heat can be transferred which include radiation, convection and conduction; among the three, conduction appears to be the most common one and it occurs quite a lot in nature; this refers to the transfer of heat through physical contact. The same properties that make silver a great conductor of electricity are the same ones that make it a great conductor of heat. The silver atoms are allowed to move easily through the metal without any serious form of resistance; the high resistance to temperature allows for silver electroplating for parts that are used in an automobile or jet engines.
Tin and nickel may not be considered noble metals but they still possess a high resistance to corrosion; they are normally referred to as passive metals and they get their resistance to corrosion as a result of a thin film of oxide that is found on their surface. The film prevents corrosion and protects from any further damage. Electroless nickel plating ensures that the density of layering is thick enough because nickel and tin are known to be vulnerable to pores.
Electroless nickel plating is another excellent way of protecting metals from corrosion; since the process doesn’t use a current; electroless nickel plating ensures that there is an even distribution of nickel on the surface and that there are no pores that would have otherwise occurred if the electrolyte process had been used. It is also important to take note that electroless nickel has phosphorous which makes the coating extra resistant to corrosion. Electroless nickel plating is normally used to offer protection to workpieces from any elements of nature that can easily lead to corrosion and in most cases the failure of the conce
ed metallic device.
