As a young man I always thought I would only ever need a solicitor to bail me out of a sticky situation with the police after a drunken night out. As I grew up I realised solicitors do much more than just that, they helped with the legal stuff when I purchased my first flat. When I was buying my flat the new homes company said if I wanted I could avoid using a solicitor and save myself at least £1,500. After speaking to my dad he advised me to use his solicitors in Kent, they have been my dad’s solicitors for many years. I spoke to the firm and they assigned me a solicitor who would do all the legal processes for me. The purchase of my flat went through in eight weeks, it was really smooth and not as much headache as I thought, I imagine this is largely down to me having a very experienced solicitor and mortgage broker. Since my property purchase I have found myself seeking legal advice from my solicitor about all sorts of things, I was having some problems with a used car I had purchased from a dealer and my solicitor told me exactly how I had to go about it. My solicitor didn’t charge me for bits of advice like that, I suppose after you use them a few times they see as part of the service. I now have to use my solicitors again because the tenants I put into my flat are not paying my rent on time and I need them out of the flat. Again, the solicitor has thoroughly explained the procedure to me and told me what I have to do and what he’ll be doing. I have to go court to get my own flat back, but I’m told this is the legal way to do things; it may take up to 12 weeks which is going to leave me a bit tight with the finances but, I’m sure I’ll get through it, I tend to do so.
