Traditional dentistry deals only with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental illnesses such as simple cases of toothache due to cavity buildup and periodontitis. The scope of this field does not include the correction of dental imperfections that do not necessary result in dental illnesses. These procedures are by a field of dentistry called cosmetic dentistry. While traditional dentistry concerns the teeth’s health, cosmetic dentistry concerns the appearance of dental structures. Well-aligned, clean-looking, and appropriately sized teeth contribute to the overall appearance of a person’s smile. In return, this positive appearance becomes an asset that boosts a person’s self-confidence. Cosmetic dentistry aims to improve a person’s smile by repairing dental imperfections. The development of cosmetic dentistry in highly industrialized cities like Las Vegas is apparent because of the growing number of dentists focusing on this field. Many dentists in this city took up additional years of study to gain the appropriate skills in practicing prosthodontics and orthodontics, the two specialties most concerned with cosmetic dentistry. However, dentists can consider themselves cosmetic dentists even if they don’t specialize in prosthodontics or orthodontics. What’s important is that they can competently perform basic cosmetic dentistry procedures. There are many procedures categorized under cosmetic dentistry, each focusing mainly on the improvement of the appearance of the teeth. Some may involve surgical procedures that aim to correct dental imperfections rather than treat dental conditions. Some of the most popular procedures performed by a Las Vegas cosmetic dentist include the placement of onlays and inlays, composite bonding, teeth whitening, and the placement of dental veneers and implants. Basic procedures like composite bonding and teeth whitening can be performed by most dentists, but procedures involving the preparation of the teeth before installation of special materials like veneers and implants require the expertise of a professional Las Vegas cosmetic dentist. Veneers are usually installed after the enamel of the teeth has been reduced by scraping and implants are installed by drilling deeply into the jaw bone. It is important for a Las Vegas cosmetic dentist to have been licensed to do these procedures, because these procedures can lead to serious complications if not properly performed. This is why it takes about three to five years of additional studies for a dentist to acquire enough skills to be considered a professional prosthodontist or orthodontist.
