The Steel Facts – A Historical Note

Steel industry forms a mammoth domicile in the advancement of the economic and commercial world. The economic progress has largely been dependent on the steel industry owing to the crucial role it played in the infrastructural and overall development of all the other sectors. You name a sector of development and it is just not complete without the usage of iron and steel. In the year 1980, the number of workers in steel industry had reached to 500,000 in the US, and when the century moved onto the year 2000, the number decreased to 224,000. However, other countries like China and India have seen a brilliant improvement in the demand for steel.

As per the global records, the years between 2000 and 2005 was the best phase for steel industry as its demand had increased by 6% during this period. Since 2000, many steel firms located in China and India saw a new phase and growing strategy; just like it happened with Tata Steel (which took over the charge of Corus Group in 2007), Shagang Group and Shanghai Baosteel Group Corporation. ArcelorMittalhowever remained the world's largest steel producer and specialized in galvanized steel pipes, fencing steel tubes, hollow steel sections and so on.

The British Geological Survey mentioned in its reports that China was the top most productive country in delivering steel for the year of 2005 and exported the product to the rich countries like Russia, USA and Japan. Later in 2008, steel was used as a trading commodity at the London Metal Exchange and finally by the end of the year the value of steel depreciated hugely, leading many cut back scenes in the production units.

Modern steel industry scenario – The contemporary steel industry is working on the combination and permutation theory of alloy metals in order to fulfil many purposes of the production units. There are many scaffold manufacturers who provide scaffolding fitting for the customized clients of the steel industry. Carbon steel is a mixed alloy of iron and carbon and is used for majority of the steel production. Low alloy steel includes elements like molybdenum, chromium, manganese, or nickel and improves the hardness of the steel.

The modern steel industry has also given rise to many steel bolts manufacturers, who manufacture the nuts and bolts for the respective manufacturing industry. Furthermore, tool steels have been introduced that are alloyed with tungsten and cobalt in greater ratio and is of very hard quality steel. This kind of steel is mainly used in making drills, axes, and other such devices that require sharp and long-lasting cutting edge.

Many other high power and strengthening alloys, for purposes like fencing steel tubes, include dual-phase steel (treated with heat and contains ferritic and martensitic microstructure), Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steel (with special alloying), Maraging steel (alloyed with nickel and other elements and a malleable metal). Welded steel tubes are sometimes considered to be made with maraging steel. Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel (straining technique used to make the steel hard), Eglin Steel (combined alloy of various elements and a low cost metal), and Hadfield steel (contains 12–14% manganese) are some more types.
