Social phobia is the most common anxiety disorder out there. It is just pure fear of being in social situations. The power of the phobia increases massively where you become the centre of attention. When people look at you, you just go bright red and a load of word salad comes out of your mouth.

You might have heard of this under a couple of other names. Social Anxiety Disorder for the official title lovers out or just plain shyness for pragmatic readers. Either way you choose to view it, this condition means over 20 million people in America alone suffer excessive and unreasonable fear of social experiences, be it just an internal feeling or more visible signs like shaking, upset stomach and heart populations.

Once a phobic reaction kicks in, the sufferer cannot think logically. You cannot talk yourself out of fear. You have to imagine what you afraid off in order to let go of it. Since your brain doesn’t know difference between reality and a vivid thought, the panic has to set in.

Social phobic’s are really good at anticipating their fears and worries in whatever situations lay ahead. Before you had a chance to be logical with one, the worst has already happened in their mind. It may seem silly to you, but to them it is very real and leaves them in genuine fear. You cannot just tell them to stop being so stupid as it doesn’t work like that.

The best thing to do is slowly introduce what is making them afraid bit by bit so they can experience the reality. Once a social phobic experiences the reality not being so bad they can move forward. The big test is getting them to take that first step.

Whilst social phobic’s, self esteem issues may just be the tip of the iceberg. If the sufferer retreats and becomes lonely then more serious issues such as depression and suicidal tendencies may occur. The early this is caught and changes made to behaviour the better, before it is too late.
