Three ways to ensure that your access audits go perfectly
Written by Steven Mifsud
Access audits are probably one of the most difficult things that many businesses have to undertake – from choosing the best people to undertake your access audit to ensuring that your building is ready and in condition, it is maintained in the regular condition so that your audit reflects the needs of your building and staff.
Three steps to ensuring your building is audited perfectly
There are three general steps that you can use to ensure that your building is audited perfectly. Access audits are easy, if you’re able to get them created and acted upon in no time. While it’s important to ensure that you’re doing the best you can by your customers, the extra support you need to create access audits and build a more accessible, compliant building.
1. Ensure that you have all of your cleaning done before working with an access audit project - it’s important to ensure that your building is in the condition it is always in before your audit. One of the reasons for this is to ensure that anything that isn’t being completed or could otherwise cause difficulties for your visitors. If this includes cleaning and any boxes or other times that might otherwise cause access issues, ensure you let your access audits specialist know. They can advise you as you are being audited on best practices for cleaning.
2. Ask questions as you’re being audited – one of the major reasons you’ll need to ask questions is to ensure that you’re meeting all of the standards that you need. One of the major reasons this is important is to ensure that your building meets part M and other guidelines. If your building needs major work, you’ll also find that your auditor will work with you to ensure that your needs can easily be met, including, if you need it, supporting your planning permission or other paperwork needs.
3. Once your audit is complete, work through it carefully – talk to your auditor, and work with the needs of your building to ensure a successful application and conclusion to your audit. Recommendations should come in bands, and those bands should tell you both priority and cost, allowing you to plan effectively. Once you have your cost bandings, and priorities, you can plan to ensure that your business is disrupted for the least time and meets the needs of your clients and staff. Doing so will also allow you to ensure that you are in control of your business needs – you can ensure that the changes being made to your business are exactly as you’d like them to be. Once you’re sure of your plans, you can move on and work with the plans you’ve made, in creating your perfect audit.
