Thyroid hair loss occurs because of hormonal imbalance. This condition occurs when the thyroid gland either produces too much hormone or produces not enough hormones. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland present in the lower front part of the neck. There are two conditions, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs with the overactive thyroid and it may cause weight loss, nervousness, etc. Hypothyroidism is the condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive. It can cause weight loss, fatigue, and many other related disorders. Many people do not develop symptoms of hypothyroidism until months or years have passed because its development is slow.
The thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in the development of hair follicles. Hair follicles are small pockets under the skin that are holding the hairs and in these follicles hair growth cycles take place. Severe or prolonged hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may result in hair fall. Thyroid hormone imbalance can shock the system into the state of telogen effluvium. It is a scalp disorder that makes the growth cycle enter into the resting phase too early and 70% of the hairs fall out within the duration of two months. When a person has one autoimmune condition, they are more likely to develop another. For example, alopecia is an autoimmune condition often seen with thyroid problems. It causes diffuse hair loss in a more localized pattern. With the passage of time, this condition may lead to baldness.
Severe thyroid hair loss can occur when the thyroid-related problems go untreated. The process of thyroid hair loss is that the hair starts to grow from the root at the bottom of the hair follicle on the scalp. The scalp’s blood vessels provide energy to the roots, creating more cells and accelerating hair growth. Hair pushes up and goes out through your skin. It passes through the oil glands that make the hair shiny and soft. Hair grows to its full length and falls out when the growth cycle starts again, but when the hormone production disrupted, especially hormone T3 and T4, it affects the other body's functioning as well as the development of the hairs at the root. Hair falls out and may the growth cycle go in the resting phase, resulting in the thinning of hairs all over the head. Sometimes thyroid hair loss may be the result of certain drugs used to treat thyroid.
Hair loss may develop slowly and the patient won’t necessarily notice missing patches or bald spots. Instead, the person may notice hair thinning all over the head. The factors of thyroid hair loss like hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be treated with natural home remedies. Low iron causes low iron. A blood protein associated with hair growth. Thyroid hair loss is usually temporary, but if it goes untreated for so long. It can get worse that may lead to hair thinning, hair loss, and baldness. Home remedies are helpful for treating thyroid, but it does not show any result, the patient must immediately see a doctor because it can lead to other disorders like anemia, stress, and dermatologic scalp problems.
