Tips for better fiction writing

It’s important to make your fiction stand out from others, but you also want to make sure you’re covering the basics. Fiction writing can produce great works of art or works of passion. Successful fiction pieces share some of the same qualities that anyone looking to write can take advantage of. Fiction writing can easily get boring if you can’t get the reader to buy into your characters or story. Fiction writing can also get extremely frustrating if you find yourself unable to express the ideas floating around in your head. Follow these tips to help improve the quality and flow of your fiction pieces. Practicing these tips will help you show Assertiveness and confidence in your writing.

Don’t spell everything out for your readers

It’s important to think of your readers as smart people. No matter what you’re writing, treat your audience as if they are up to speed with you and your universe. You do this by leaving certain things unexplained. If your character went to the store, they don’t need to know small things like describing him paying or leaving the store, unless its relevant to the story.

Another thing to avoid is writing in linear fashion. Sometimes author get stuck in the rhythm of writing out their story exactly as it happens. The start in one place and continue moving along as if it was real life. Great pieces of fiction are disjointed and require the reader to revisit certain points. Again with the store example, you don’t need to describe your character putting on their shoes, walking down the street, entering the store, looking at the different types of milk and then finally paying. Treat your audience as if they are smart enough to skip certain parts of that description.

Be very critical of your writing

Some days you just don’t have the energy to write or come up with new ideas. When you feel like this it’s important to go into editor mode. No one will be 100% honest with you about your work. It’s up to you to be your own best critic and find ways to improve your writing. There are certain things that only you’ll be able to see about your writing. It’s important to not only look for spelling mistakes but also try different ways of saying the same way. Push yourself to your limits and you’ll find your writing benefits immensely.

Practice dedication

Being a writer isn’t easy. Being a great writing is even harder. Great writers don’t write when they feel like it, they make time and write daily. They also dedicate time to study great writing and learn new tricks from other authors. Great authors also have the presence of mind to know when its time to take a break. If you combine all of these tips you’ll come up with your best work of fiction.
