To Replicate Or Duplicate? Which Will You Use For Your DVD?
Written by Melvyn Board
Several methods exist where it is possible to duplicate or replicate a CD or DVD. For short runs which are needed quickly and where quality is not particularly an issue, it is usually best to opt for duplication whereas for larger consignments and better recording replication techniques are far better.
Of course, in the long run it all comes down to cost, speed and audience expectations.
On the whole the companies who use both CD and DVD duplication and replication techniques tend to be in the entertainment industry ie film companies, theaters and games developers. Private companies use them too to distribute information about their products or services to customers or even for in house training purposes.
Discs can be duplicated simply using a home computer and its DVD or CD-ROM drive. For larger orders of discs separate machines for this specific purpose are employed such as hand-fed tower systems, or even robotic versions.
When it comes to mass replication per-recorded (or pressed) discs are made using a factory mold and an injection process, using a glass master and stampers. In this instance, many DVD and CD replication and duplication companies offering this service will also go on to provide printing and packaging services for the client. Storage and distribution can also be available on demand.
Replication can initially seem more expensive but the higher number of copies produced reduces the unit costs per disc and it can actually prove to be the cheaper option in the long run.
DVD replication gives a client far more flexibility and creativity when it comes to producing their own company DVD. For instance, through the use of an editing suite it is possible to add an entire menu to the film recording, including chapter breaks, sub titles and even post or per-production interviews.
The downside of using DVD replication is the increased sensitivity it gives to the disc. For instance it is far easier to scratch and therefore damage the output on a replicated DVD than it is a CD which has been duplicated. Many clients are willing to risk this though for the benefits of the improved initial quality the DVD replication process provides.
The artwork on the finished CD or DVD can be provided in house by the company producing the discs, or be provided by the client themselves. A very professional touch can be added here when completed in house using techniques such as screen printing, laser jet customization and bespoke presentation cases. For many clients this is the big plus side of getting their CD or DVD produced commercially – the additional quality in terms of printing and packaging that it brings.
