When we perform a successful link building campaign, that helps our website towards better search engine ranking, page rank and branding. But when you are just starting out in link building arena, you may do certain things incorrect and that will result in negative search engine rankings and page rank. So in today's article, I'm going to share top 10 link building mistakes one should avoid while building backlinks for their websites or blogs:

1. Gone are the days when we use to submit a website home and internal pages to thousands of web directories. That trend has gone altogether. These days, we should be submitting our website into high quality directories only where our listings are reviewed by human beings and directories with some real page rank, traffic and authority in its niche.

2. If you are submitting your content on hundreds of article directories you are making a mistake and may face some form of penalty from search engines including Google for spreading the same article copy on hundreds or even thousands of websites using automated software’s or programs. So the idea approach in today web will be using your articles into very few article publishing websites only.

3. Anchor text is very important that we use for promoting our website for various keywords. But its a big mistake if we are generating backlinks for our website using single anchor text only. Ideally, we should be using some set of keywords as anchor text to make our links natural to search engines. And if we are getting thousands of links for the same anchor text, we are over optimizing our website for that keyword and will result in some form of penalty from Google and other search engines.

4. Google with other search engines are penalizing websites heavily in search engine results that are involved in link buying or selling activities. So you should remain away from websites that are publicly selling or buying links. If you must buy links, you should keep them secret and leave no sign of link buying or selling online at least.

5. If you are creating accounts on discussion forums for the sake of backlinks only, stop doing that. Most of active discussion forums will block your account for such activities. And if you are aiming at contributing positively in online communities, that will help you positively in search engines.

6. You should not be using page rank as the only factor when deciding about whether to take link from a website or not. There should be some other factors you should take into consideration like that website trust, relevant and content type.

7. Link building is not all about quality but instead it’s about quality. Few links from relevant websites are beneficial than hundreds of links from low quality websites.

8. When generating links, you should not ignore a website simply because they are giving away nofollow links. More importantly, focus should be on quality and relevance to your website niche. When our website has a mixture of dofollow and nofollow links, that will make our websites links look more natural.

9. Gone are the days when we able to get rankings for our websites by linking them with each other. In today's web world, those techniques are considered as spammy techniques and will result in some form of penalty from search engines.

10 When doing link exchange with other websites, you should stay away from websites with no online history or having bad history. You may face penalties from search engines if you are linking out to bad neighbors someway from your website pages.
