Top 5 Tips on how to Avoid Roaming Charges for Travel Abroad
Written by John Peterson
I am often asked by customers and friends who are traveling abroad as they can to avoid getting stung 'roaming rate rip-off that mobile phone operators and networks around the world seems so desperate to make all of us. Even the EU, when roaming connection charges, which are capped and controlled by the EU Commission, customers can pay an additional 5 times the rate of house calls, to make a local call. And it only cares about the EU's phone calls and long rates in the euro area not in excess of this legislation!
One of our customers find us after he returned home to Japan and got the $ 74k invoice, when he was in his Smartphone related streaming video, or tethered to your computer and watch the videos! Well that is an extreme case, but how do you avoid coming home after the event 'bill shock' trap? Here are my Top 5 Tips on how to protect yourself:
Tip 1: Check what exactly your service provider will charge you for voice, data, or test the destination country. See if they offer any travel packages available to consumers. Often it is free to choose, but is generally an "opt-in instead of your standard proposal.
Tip 2: Rent or buy a local SIM card in your phone. Local prices are almost always cheaper, even calls to home and, if your phone is unlocked you can drag the country of the SIM and take advantage of local rates. Make sure your phone is not connected to your home carrier (call them to check) and then just use a local prepaid SIM or a higher level of consumer and the best rates, you can rent payment after short-term contract SIM phone rentals and SIM rental providers.
Tip 3: If you restart the iPhone 4 or iPad, some programs can be very data hungry. How to Tip 2, you can rent a microSIM data package for local use or to purchase advance ruling to determine its own costs.
Tip 4: Get hold of the data management app to keep an eye on data usage for your iPhone or PC. It is cheap and give you visibility of how much data you use in relation to any plan you may have. The iPhone used to check Bjango or PC, such as a DataView that can be free with a data transmission service, or at a minimal cost, as a separate lease.
Tip 5: Saving the obvious option to disable any roaming, if you can stand out of touch. Ask your carrier to prevent it, that you will not be offended, or perhaps only once a day to check your messages, and then you are in control. But whether to disable data roaming, unless you really need. If you link your laptop computer, auto-updates, such as the Microsoft service may be running in the background without you even knowing it.
As with any service that is "buyer beware". You are welcomed roaming somewhere in your contract is to be active, to understand their rates and make an informed decision. A week before you go thinking "passport, tickets, money, mobile, and keep in touch more.
