If you are going to invest in the forex market, you should definitely know what financial instruments are. A financial instrument is a medium that can be traded, and can include cash instruments and derivative instruments. Financial instruments include things like loans, deposits, and securities. In the forex market, there are several instruments that investors should be aware of.

Outright Forwards

In outright forwards, no money actually changes hands until a predetermined future date. In these trades, the buyer and seller agree on an exchange rate for a future date that may not necessarily be based on the market rates. The duration of this kind of trade may be a couple of days, months, or even years.

Futures

Futures are currency trade transactions that have a standard contract size and a maturity date, which is typically three months away. Futures are pretty standard and also usually include an interest rate. Smaller investors or those new to the forex market tend to trade futures more frequently.

Currency Swaps

Currency swaps are a kind of transaction in which two parties trade currencies for a specific period and reverse the transaction on a specific date. It is important to know that currency swaps are not standardized contracts and can be used to secure cheaper debt.

Spot

Spot market currencies are always sold for cash and delivered right away. The prices of these transactions reflect what the currency is actually worth. Spot instruments are the most popular mode of investing in the forex market.
