Trading In Your Old Car
We buy cars for utility and convenience. Some of us do it more often than the others. It is wise to remove the older cars before bringing in the newer ones. One may find buying a new or used car much easier than deciding what to do with the present one. Trading your car in to the dealer is usually the most convenient way to go.
Trading in your old car is the wisest way to deal with your dear old car. Dealers of used cars generally recommend your trade-in as they can make the procedure of trade-in easy for you. Trading in a car is a simple same-day transaction and it involves a minimum amount of sweat. You can allow the dealer to appraise your car for its performance, age and other factors to determine its trade-in value. If you think it can fetch you more you can always bargain for its trade-in value or accept the dealer offer. This price is the amount the dealer deducts from the amount you pay for your new vehicle as a trade-in.
The advantages of opting for a Trade-in
Despite the fact that the Trade-in value is often lower than that fetched you if you sold your old car to private buyer, it has certain advantages.
The advantages are:
You save time: If you are hard pressed for time trading in makes sense
You save effort: Once you have traded your car in with a dealer, it entirely his responsibility to prepare it and handle the resale
You save on advertisements, test drives and legal battles
You get a tax advantage: The trade in gives you a tax advantage if you buying a vehicle at the same time. When you trade your car in, you only pay sales tax on the difference in cost between its trade-in value and the price of the new car. If you are living in a state with a high sales tax, a trade in can markedly reduce the sales tax you would pay for your new car which would not have been the case if you had sold your car to a private buyer.
You avoid potential post-sale headaches: If you sell your car yourself you are exposing yourself dangerously to the private buyer. When you trade in your car to a dealer for another one you are absolving yourself of any liability.
While you look at all these advantages you may not quite miss the small loss in the price. The difference very well makes up for all those efforts and responsibilities the dealer is taking up. The higher price he is asking for would well cover the refurbishing and marketing costs besides providing for his profit margin.
