Manila is often used synonymously for Metropolitan or Metro Manila composed of 17 different cities which include diversified groups of Filipinos from the different provinces in the island. The Metropolitan area, which extends far beyond the actual city limit, has around 20 million residents as of the year 2009 census. The majority of the Filipino people (Manileños) are from the various islands and regions of the country. Most of the migrants abode in this largest city of the nation to subsist from the poor life in the province. Some members of the population are the exotic Chinese people, who have usually lived for centuries in Manila. There exist still a large proportion of Americans, Spaniards, Arabs, Indonesians and South Koreans. Many Filipinos have mixed with the foreign population and thus give the city a cosmopolitan nature, global charm and an interesting combination between Asia and the West. There are numerous travelers who have described Manila as characterized by mob people and polluted environment, because of the numerous vehicles that are jam-packed along the streets of Manila, causing much heavy traffic to experience. However, there is much to learn in Manila and encounter unusual life of the people, as well as to discover the busy city at night that makes foreigners indulge to a trip to the Metropolitan area. Today, the modern city of Manila is the centre of Christianity in Asia and distinguished multi-ethnic cities in the universe anticipated with a fast growing population.
