History of Jodhpur

Founded by Rao Jodha in the year 1459, it was also named after him. Initially, it was known as Marwar. Now, it has two parts-the old city and the new city. A 10 km long wall surrounded it, distinguishes the old city. The new city is known as the walled city.

Mehrangarh Fort

Umaid Bhawan Palace

This palace is known as the finest example of architecture. Located on a high hill, it is set amidst the green gardens. The palace used to be the largest residence in the world. One amazing feature of the palace includes that it always maintains a pleasant temperature. It boasts of 347 rooms and some part of the palace has now become a heritage hotel.

Jaswant Thada

Built of marble, it is the graceful cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The main memorial looks like a temple with elegantly carved marble stone. Tourists can reach here through the rocky hills. The white marble monument resembles to a beautiful temple, enticing onlookers with its stunning domes, pillars and pavilions.

Phool Mahal

The mahal symbolizes the meaning of the palace of flowers. It is a famous period room in Mehrangarh fort museum. Especially built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh in the 18th century, it was constructed as a private room for the king's pleasure. The gold has been used for the construction of Phool Mahal.

Nagaur Fair

This is the second largest cattle fair after Pushkar fair of Rajasthan. This fair is annually celebrated in January. Activities like trading, camel races, competitions, dance and music add more charm to the fair.
The Mirchi (chilly) of Rajasthan is also one of the trading items of the fair. Other popular trading items are wooden articles and leather goods.
