Depression is mental illness that’s becoming common these days. About 17 million adult Americans suffer from this illness. It is normal to feel sad about a bad life experience, for these feelings lessen in intensity as time passes. However, if these negative emotions persist even if a considerable amount of time has passed and if these affect the daily activities of a person, it is considered as a serious problem. One alternative healing method used to treat depression is psychotherapy. It is an approach towards modifying the cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychodynamic aspects of a person. Skilled psychotherapists evaluate the situational factors that cause the depressed behavior and help patients deal with these factors, eventually leading to complete recovery. Psychotherapists work on their patients by first identifying the problems behind the negative emotions. They pinpoint which of these problems can be resolved easily. They teach patients to set realistic goals and enhance their mental and emotional well-being. These experts also help identify success or recovery through similar feelings patients have had in the past. Depression is often accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and helplessness towards a situation. Depressed patients tend to generalize situations into “always happening” and “never to happen” categories. They tend to be very pessimistic towards their goals and dreams, resulting in distorted thinking. Psychotherapy, as an alternative healing method for depression, helps patients nurture a more optimistic outlook in life. There are also instances when depressed patients cannot fully identify the reasons for their depression. Psychotherapy, as an effective alternative healing method, explores the learned thoughts and behaviors that contribute to a patient’s depression. Psychotherapists help them improve social interaction and understand themselves better. Psychotherapy experts also help depressed patients become more involved in fulfilling activities. It is believed that consistent psychotherapy can help reduce the possibilities of recurring instances of depression. The support from family and friends play a crucial role in a person’s recovery. Each person in the support system can encourage the patient to continue receiving psychotherapy and convince him or her of the remarkable results that this alternative healing method provides. This support system also helps patients practice coping techniques and problem-solving skills.
