Tuition Options for Paralegal Students
Written by Tamika Friedland
A paralegal education can open doors to opportunity in the legal field and can allow students and graduates to work alongside the best lawyers all across the country. Demand for qualified paralegals is expected to increase significantly in the next five years, making this career field a solid choice for students seeking stable employment. Finding the right tuition assistance programs can provide the necessary funds for paralegal students to continue their education in this fast-paced field.
Here are some of the best options for funding a paralegal education in today's economic climate.
Military tuition assistancernCurrent and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces may qualify for various forms of assistance in paying for vocational training and certification, college tuition or continuing education courses. The terms of these programs vary depending on the current status of the military member and the branch of the service in which he or she enlisted; up to 100 percent of the tuition expenses incurred by the service member may be paid by their branch of the military. This can significantly reduce the cost of paralegal studies and may provide valuable skills and training for former and current military personnel.
Employer assistancernFor students who attend classes in addition to their regular employment, programs to help with the costs of tuition may be available through their employer. This is especially true in larger corporations and when the coursework will be of direct help to the student in the performance of his or her regular job duties. Some companies may offer reimbursement to students who complete continuing education courses in the paralegal field. Paralegal students should consult with their company's human resources or personnel department to determine the availability and eligibility requirements for these tuition reimbursement or assistance programs.
Student loansrnA number of publicly traded corporations offer student loans that can be used to pay for coursework at accredited educational institutions. One of the largest is the SLM Corporation, more commonly referred to as Sallie Mae; this private lender was once a government-sponsored enterprise but now is publicly traded and privately managed. Student loans typically offer deferred payment plans that allow students to delay payments until after they complete the course of training and enter the job market. This allows a greater degree of financial flexibility for students in the process of completing their paralegal education.
Scholarships and other alternative forms of funding may also be available for students who qualify. By working toward certification in the paralegal field, these students can enhance their chances of finding employment in today's challenging economic environment and can create a firm foundation upon which to build their future success.
