What is a dental implant?

If you did have a damaged tooth, you would have thought of replacing it with a new one. The process of replacing or filling a damaged tooth with the help of artificial root and tooth is known as dental implantation. There will be a placement of a metallic screw within your jawbone to ensure that the new tooth will be stable and let the patient do all the actions of the mouth without any issues. There is a lot of factors to consider before choosing the method of dental implantation as there are many available. If your jawbone is healthy, you will get one type of replacement. An unhealthy jawbone will make you do some alterations and try another type of implantation. Dental implants by DeFabio Dental Design are divided into two main categories. In this article, let us discuss the types of dental implants based on the stability or the health of the jawbone in brief.

Types of dental implants

Endosteal dental implant

It is the most used type of dental implant around the world. In this type of implant, the dental implant will be directly placed in the jawbone. Endo means “within” and hence it has got its name. If you do an endosteal implant, your jawbone will start to grow above the implant over time. So, the implant will settle without any disturbance from the external forces. It will be stable and will provide better benefits for tooth replacement. There are two types of endosteal implants as cylinder and blade implants. Cylinder implants are the most used implant type, and it will place a cylindrical titanium screw below your jawbone. There will be some deterioration in your jawbone on some occasions. In these cases, your jawbone will not be able to hold a screw implant. Hence, you should go for the blade type of implant in which a small titanium piece will replace the screw. There will be a post on your gum in both of these types and the prosthetic tooth can find a place over it.

Subperiosteal dental implant

Not everyone will have a stable jawbone that can support the placement of a prosthetic tooth by an endosteal implant. There can be several reasons for this inability of the jawbone like a bone loss or ineffective jawbone. These people should undergo bone augmentation or grafting procedures. Then only they can place a dental screw on the endosteal implant. If you do not wish to do it, you can consider doing a subperiosteal dental implant. Although this method is not widely used, it will be effective as like the above method. In this method, a dental implant will find a place below the gum. It can be either above or below the outer layer of the connective tissue covering the jaw tissue. There will be a titanium frame with a post for the prosthetic tooth placement. Like the bone coverage in endosteal implant, here the gum will heal over the implant to make it stable to restrict the movements due to shear forces.
