Motorcycle insurance is often overlooked by riders, but it is crucial in the event of an accident. However, policies vary, and it is important to understand the differences before committing. Here are the most common types of motorcycle insurance coverage to consider. Get a free case consultation to fully understand your insurance coverages.

Liability coverage:

In most states, liability insurance is the minimum coverage required by law for motorcycle riders. It provides coverage for damage caused by the rider to others or their property while operating the motorcycle. If the rider is found to be at fault for an accident, this insurance will pay for the medical bills, lost wages, and property damage of the other party up to the policy's limits. However, it does not cover any damage to the rider's own motorcycle or injuries sustained by the rider.

Collision coverage:

While collision coverage is not mandatory in most states, it is strongly advised. It covers the cost of repairing your motorcycle, regardless of who is found at fault in the accident. This type of coverage is particularly beneficial if you have a new motorcycle or are still paying off your bike.

Comprehensive coverage:

Comprehensive coverage provides broader protection for your motorcycle compared to collision coverage as it not only pays for repairs resulting from accidents but also covers damages caused by weather events, theft, vandalism, and glass breakage. It is optional coverage in most states, but it is strongly recommended if you desire complete protection for your motorcycle. Moreover, comprehensive coverage also pays for repairs to your own motorcycle.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage:

If you are injured in a car accident due to an uninsured driver or one with insufficient insurance to cover the damages, this coverage will protect you. It also offers protection if you're a victim of a hit-and-run driver. Although uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is mandatory in some states, it is optional coverage in others. However, it is advisable to have this coverage even if not required by law, as it can be beneficial in the event of an accident with an uninsured driver.

Medical payments coverage:

If you're involved in an accident, medical payments coverage will cover your medical expenses, regardless of who is at fault. It may also cover expenses such as funeral costs and rehabilitation services. Although medical payment coverage is not mandatory in most states, it can provide valuable protection if you're seriously injured in an accident.

Final thoughts:

Various motorcycle insurance options are accessible to protect riders from diverse risks. Certain coverage types are obligatory by law, while others are optional; however, it is strongly recommended to have them for added protection.
