Loft conversions have gained in popularity because of its many advantages. They can help you transform the garret area of the house to a functional room, typically an extra bedroom, a gym, a library, or an office space. Thus the space of your house that had been untouched, or has been dumped with scrap and other unwanted, broken or not in use materials, could be productively utilized, giving room to more space for your children, eventually leading to a bigger home.rnUtilizing the attic can be a complicated process. It is therefore advisable to contact a specialist who can help you with the entire process without too much of your involvement. Before you think of converting the loft, inspection of the space is essential. Ideally it should meet the necessary requirements of its dimensions. This includes expansion of the headroom to a minimum of 2 to 3 meters. In most cases, permission is required if there are major alterations to the roof space, and if it crosses a few specific conditions and limitations. However, if the extension does not cross the highest portion of the roof, if the same material is used as per the existing house, with no raised platforms, balconies or verandas, a loft conversion can begin without the need of planning permission. It is best advised that you seek expert opinion to clarify all the relevant points that might cause a hindrance at a later stage. Loft conversions can be of many types. Among them there are two common types of conversions. These include: Roof Window Conversion: This type of conversion is an excellent option for house owners looking for an extension. A roof window conversion does not need much construction as it is built in such a way that it is in line with the roof of the house. The windows installed provide sufficient light to the space making it habitable. The biggest advantage of this type of conversion is there is no requirement for planning permission making the work much more quick and easy. Nevertheless building regulation approval is required when you opt for this conversion. Dormer Conversion: This type of conversion is basically made to provide extra space in the loft. A dormer conversion is quite popular because it adds aesthetic elegance to your house. This type of extension requires planning permission from the authorities. rnApart from these, the less common conversions include, hip, glade and mansard. These are incorporated as per the circumstances and the features of the house. Before you begin work for loft conversions, one should also keenly observe for signs of rainwater that might enter the roof space. Dark stains on the beam or the walls might give an indication of the problem. In case such a problem persists, one has to shell out extra on the repair works on the roof. This work might be conveniently performed while fitting the roof windows and constructing the loft. With time, loft conversions have witnessed a huge evolution, as various commercial or non-residential spaces have been transformed into homes in most developed cities of the country.
