A small hole in the gastrointestinal tract is called as stomach ulcer. Duodenal is the most common type of ulcer that occures within the starting 12 inches of small intestine, present beyond the stomach. Gastric Ulcers are those ulcers that form in the stomach. Ulcer is not at all contagious or cancerous. Stomach ulcers may become malignant while Duodenal ulcers are always benign. Stomach ulcer is that type of disease that is very commen and effects three out of five people. The maximum size of a stomach ulcer is s3/4 of an inch and normal size is 1/8 of an inch.
CAUSES
The destruction of the gastric lining of the stomach by hydrochloric acid directly lead to causes of stomach ulcers. Hydrochloric acid is an acid which is normally present in the digestive juices of our stomach. Antibiotics are the most effective treatment for stomach ulcers. Two main causes responsible for gastric ulcers are injury of the gastric mucosal lining and mucous defenses. Excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, genetic predisposition, and psychological stress are important contributing factors in the formation and worsening of duodenal ulcers. Other major cause of ulcers is the regular use of medications such as aspirin and any othetr medication. Another main causes of ulcer is cigarette smoking.
SYMTOMS
The major symptom of an ulcer is a burning feeling in the stomach area and it can lasts between 30 minutes and 3 hours. This pain is often in the form of heartburn, indigestion or hunger. The pain normally occurs in the upper abdomen, but sometimes it may occur below the breastbone.The pain occurs immediately after eating in some cases. In other cases, the pain may not occur until hours after eating. The pain frequently happens awakens at night. Weeks of pain may be followed by weeks of not having pain. Pain can be relieved by drinking milk, eating or resting.Other symtoms include appetite and weight loss.some persons may experience weight gain because the persons eats more to ease discomfort.The other symtoms include recurrent vomiting, blood in the stool and anemia.
TREATMENT
Protonix is a prescribed medicine for stomach ulcers and formation of acids in the stomach. The recommended dosage of protonix for adults 40mg two times a day.the main ingredient of this medicine is pantoprazole.
WARNING
Diabetic patients should use this medicine carefully and they should get thir glucose levels checked regularly.People allergetic to protonix should avoid this medicine.Pregnant women should not use protonix without taking doctor's advice.
SIDE EFFECTS
The common side effect of this medicine are like feeling pukish,formation of gas and pain in the stomach and headache.It may also cause allergic reaction like reddening of skin and it can lead to breathlessness and swelling on lips,face and throat.
