In simple words, IVF is a very useful ART method that has helped and still helping millions of intended parents to have their own baby and enjoy parenthood.
What is “in vitro” mean? Taken from Latin word, it means glass and the word is specifically borrowed for IVF procedure where fertilization take place in glass instead of female’s womb. The experiment associated with infertility was first being carried out in glass or test tube or Petri Dish. This is the reason by this procedure was previously popularized as Test Tube Baby. Since then now things have changed and range of techniques have been developed and today the word “in vitro” is used to introduce any kind of biological processes that are being carried out in the lab or outside the body.
Let’s discuss it in more detail. IVF is majorly used as a treatment for infertility in men as well as women. Most often applied when all other methods have failed or didn’t produce optimum results. As the procedure is very delicate, it requires a complete understanding of it and must be carried out with extreme care and precision. IVF is a step by step process that starts with the monitoring of woman’s ovulation and some medications are also prescribed to increase the number of eggs production. When female’s ova or her eggs are matured enough to retrieve, your doctors remove eggs from your ovary and keep them with your partner’s or donor’s sperm in laboratory under certain temperature and environmental conditions.
After three or five days when embryos are fertilized, healthy ones are selected and transferred back in her womb for further growth. This is a natural IVF cycle because female’s body naturally makes a complete ovum and then fertilized with sperm. When fertilized egg is transferred, it attaches itself to the female’s uterus wall and start developing into fetus.
IVF can help with various complications such as Endometriosis, Fallopian Tubes or uterus difficulties, difficulty in ovulation, inadequate sperm count, motility and unexplained issues.
