Understanding and Reducing Challenging Behaviour: An ABA Approach for Fort Wayne Families
Featuring Adapt For Life - AFL Autism Services
Behaviour Always Has a Function
The single most useful idea in applied behavior analysis is that behaviour is not random. A child who screams, hits, drops to the floor or runs is doing something that works for them.
Broadly, behaviour serves four purposes: to obtain something, to escape something, to gain attention, or because it feels good in itself. Identifying which one is operating is the entire foundation of an effective plan.
Why Punishment-Based Approaches Fail
Suppressing a behaviour without replacing it leaves the underlying need unmet. The need does not disappear; it re-emerges as a different behaviour, often a less convenient one.
Families in Fort Wayne, New Haven and Huntertown who have tried consequence-based approaches at home frequently describe exactly this pattern. It is not a failure of parenting. It is a predictable outcome of addressing form rather than function.
Functional Behaviour Assessment in Practice
A BCBA gathers data on what happens immediately before a behaviour, what the behaviour looks like precisely, and what happens immediately afterwards. Patterns emerge quickly once recorded systematically.
Parents are often surprised by the findings. A behaviour assumed to be attention-seeking frequently turns out to be escape-driven, which changes the intervention completely.
Teaching a Replacement Behaviour
Once the function is known, the programme teaches a socially acceptable behaviour that achieves the same outcome more efficiently. A child who hits to escape a task learns to request a break. A child who screams for attention learns to tap an adult's arm.
The replacement must work at least as well and at least as fast as the original behaviour, at least initially, or the child will revert. This is the step most home strategies miss.
Antecedent Strategies: Preventing Rather Than Reacting
The most effective plans change what happens before the behaviour. Visual schedules that remove uncertainty. Choices that restore some control. Shorter demands with built-in breaks. Warnings before transitions.
Prevention is unglamorous and enormously effective. Many families see the largest reduction in difficult moments from antecedent changes alone.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is ABA about stopping behaviours?
No. Effective ABA teaches replacement skills and changes the environment. Simply suppressing a behaviour without addressing its function is not good practice.
How long before challenging behaviour reduces?
Some antecedent changes produce results within days. Teaching robust replacement behaviours generally takes longer and depends on consistency across settings.
Can you help with behaviour at school?
With consent, clinical teams can share strategies and data with school staff so that approaches are consistent.
What services does the Fort Wayne clinic offer?
Clinic-based ABA therapy, early intervention and BCBA consultation are available at the Fort Wayne location.
