Unusual Scholarships for Education Majors
Written by Steven Jay
Scholarships for education majors are plentiful, which is not a bad thing. Teaching as a profession is still facing a shortage, so you know you can get a job after school, but the salaries are not very high. Many teachers leave school saddled with debt. This is a conundrum because teaching requires you to have a degree, but college costs keep rising, while teacher salaries do not. What is an aspiring educator to do? Federal Perkins loan forgiveness programs and the federal TEACH grant certainly help, but they are not enough. Students must still apply for scholarships for education majors so they do not have tons of student loans when finishing school.
There is an abundance of scholarships for education majors out there, so check out our list where we have picked out a few of the weirdest and most unique.
The Hardwood Forest Foundation wants us to know how important the trees are. They are willing to provide college money to those future teachers who agree to talk about the trees in their classrooms. Each applicant will receive an information packet about this renewable resource, and they should tell the Foundation how they will include lessons on “The Truth about Trees,” in their classrooms. Seniors in a Bachelor of Education program, master or doctoral students may apply for these awards. One $1500 and 14 $1000 scholarships are available each year.
Educating children does not happen just in the classroom. How many of us grew up with educational programming on PBS? The Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship sponsored by The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences along with Ernst & Young LLP, in honor of the star and founder of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Those who aspire to work with children through children’s educational media can win this award of $10,000 and a chance to have a mentor out of either Los Angeles or New York.
rnThere are many scholarships out there for registered members of Native American tribes, but this one is specifically for those in the MESBEC (Math, Engineering, Science, Business, Education, Computers) fields. High-potential Native Americans can apply for the Catching the Dream Scholarship, a scholarship for education majors that has three separate awards times: spring, summer, and fall. To apply, you only need to be a registered member of a federally recognized, state recognized, or terminated U.S. tribe.
Scholarships for education majors are a-plenty, but this list of the weirdest and unique will give you a great start on what to apply for. Take the opportunity to get your education paid for.
