Upholstery as a term has evolved from the Middle English words up and holden, that implies to hold up. In modern context the term signifies the art of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. The magical touch of upholstery can be added to our regular domestic furniture as well as to the luxurious ambiance of automobile interiors. Even airplanes and luxury yachts, launch and steamers utilize the deft artistry of upholstery services. The artisan occupied in this specialized profession is known as an upholsterer. An apprentice in this profession is also referred to as outsider or trimmer. Traditional upholstery uses old manual methods and relies on naturally available materials like coil springs (post-1850), animal hair (cow, horse, & hog), coir, straw and hay, hessians, linen scrims, wadding, etc. It’s more of a layer by layer development.

In traditional upholstery the most commonly used tools were like Chalk (upholsterer's chalk or tailor's chalk), Goggles, Needle guards, Rubber mallet, Chalk (upholsterer's chalk or tailor's chalk), Goggles , Needle guards, Rubber mallet, Scissors, Sewing machine, Staple gun, Staple knocker (staple puller), Upholstery hammer, Upholstery regulator, Upholstery needles (round point curved needles and button needles), Webbing stretcher. Modern innovation to make life easier for the upholsterers has led to the advent of advanced upholstery tools like Staple Lifter, Staple Remover, Staple & Tack Claw, Plastic Handled Staple and Tack Claw, Combination Ripping Chisel Tack Claw, Cranked Ripping Chisel Amber Handle, Tack Claw Carded, Square Point Knive, Rigid Tucking Tool, Gooseneck Webbing Stretcher Webbing, Canvas, Leather & Hide Stretcher, Beech Webbing Stretcher, Lever Spring Stretcher, Flush Head Ripping Pincers, Hog Rings with Sharp Points, Quick Nailer, Straight Round Needle Kit ,Curved Needle Kit and many more utility tools.

Vital raw materials that make a difference to the quality of an upholstered product can be broadly categorized into four categories viz., the frame which will provide the structure of the upholstered product; the spring system; the cushioning or padding; and the final fabric or leather covering. Incidentally these are also the areas that call for the attention of the product owners for minor or major repair. It is essential to timely attending to the small repairing requirements so that they do not get bigger issues while repairing them and cost you more. With experts upholsterers and outsiders available around it just needs to find a quality upholstery boutique to take care of your repairing needs.
